Avoiding tantrums is far easier than dealing with them once they begin. The first step is to learn the triggers for your child. Whether they are because you say “no”, because they hate their car seat or when they are tired.
Here are some hints to help you to to avoid the storm before it begins:
- Learn the triggers and avoid them
- Learn the problem situations and avoid them
- Lead by example. If you shout a lot or get angry very quickly then your child will see this as acceptable behaviour.
- Set yourself a rule to try to encourage and praise good behaviour but ignore bad behaviour (to a point!).
- If your child is just yearning for independance then offer choices. This way they think that they have a say but you can ensure that both choices you offer are ones which you are happy with.
If all else fails read our advice on dealing with tantrums once they begin.
