Who makes a good organic baby food?
A Baby NuNu Gold Star goes to ………… Ella’s Kitchen Pouches
Ella’s Kitchen are a company which creates organic and healthy purees in foil resealable pouches. They are ideal to throw in a nappy bag with no fear of smashed jars or spilled food. You can just squeeze a dollop of puree onto a spoon and feed it to baby. Keep squeezing until baby is full and then screw the top back on and pop it back in your bag.
The pouches are small and light so they can be carried in a nappy bag, a hand bag or a coat pocket. One of the most tempting things about them is that most of the baby purees are a mixture of fruit and vegetable so they are ideal for fussy babies who refuse savouries as all of the savoury veg is disguised by yummy fruitiness! I have tasted them and they are full of flavour, unlike many bland baby jar foods. This means that baby learns about flavour from an early age and so can move seamlessly onto eating the same food as the rest of the family, something which can be difficult for babies who have only ever eaten bland food. Plus everything is organic, there is no added sugar or salt and there are no E numbers or GM ingredients. The company also work closely with a paediatrition and a child nutritionist. Perfect!
The purees can also be added to other recipes such as porridge or on toast and can be mixed with mummy made food for a bit of extra flavour. The company have won many awards and the pouches are available in most UK supermarkets. They can also be bought outside of the UK from the company Airberg.
The products:
Smoothie Fruits - fruit, fruit and more fruit. They come as The Red One, The Purple One, The Green One and The Yellow One
Stage 1 Baby Food - The yummy mixes I mentioned earlier. My baby’s favourite was Carrot, Apple and Parsnip. My least favourite was Sweet Potato, Pumpkin, Apple and Blueberry because it was delicious but I had a very messy baby who got the purple goo everywhere!
Pasta Sauces: These all contain at least 2 of your child’s 5 a day recommendation. You can choose from The Italian One, The Indian One and The American One and you don’t even have to preheat them which means less fuss and less chance of burnt mouths! You (or your child) can just squeeze them onto their main meal and it is heated by the food. Great for children like my 3 year old who insists that every meal he eats should have a smiley face on it!
Stage 2 baby food - a new range is the stage 2 range for babies 7 months and up. They are slightly lumpier and have the proteins, carbohydrates and fats that older babies need. They come in great grown up flavours such as Fish Pie and Mash, Beef Stew and Spuds, Chicken Casserole and Rice and Vegetable Bake with Lentils. As a special treat for those good boys and girls who eat all of their dinner there is also the scrummy Strawberry and Cream Rice Pudding
Cute Trivia: The company is named after the creator’s daughter Ella.
Naughty Parent Tip Number 1: Nab some of the Strawberry and Cream Rice Pudding for yourself and eat it squeezed onto a biscuit or a fairy bun.
Naughty Parent Tip Number 2: Invest in some pouches of the Smoothie Fruits and mix with Vodka, Cava or Champagne for a healthy cocktail!
Naughty Parent Tip Number 3: Put a small blob of Smoothie Fruit mix on a large white plate then add a slice of pie, cake, sorbet, panacotta or ice cream and pretend it is ultra expensive coulis (or even naughtier that you slaved away in the kitchen to make it yourself)!
Well Behaved Mum Tip: On a diet? For a healthier alternative to adult sauces or pestos use a dash of The Italian One on a small bowl of pasta to feel confident that you are eating pure organic goodness or use The Indian One as a dip for crudites (that means celery and carrots NOT Doritos and fries!!!)
