What should I pack in my hospital bag?

bagsIf you are planning to be in hospital for just one night here are some essentials:

  • A night dress or loose dress (for the birth)
  • Gigantic knickers and pyjamas (for after the birth)
  • Socks or slippers
  • Dressing gown (you will feel better if you end up on a ward if you have a bit of extra coverage)
  • A hair brush, clips and bobbles
  • A book or mini games console for hubby/ your birth partner to use in the stretches between contractions (if you are lucky enough to have down periods)
  • Lots of change for coffee machines, telephones, television cards, etc
  • A list of numbers for hubby/ your birth partner to call after the birth
  • A pen (just in case!)
  • At least 2 copies of your birthing plan
  • A camera
  • Aromatherapy oils (if you are into them)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Clothes for coming home in for you (remember that you will have shrunk a little but probably only to the size of about 4 months pregnant and you will be sore in places so lay off the tight jeans)
  • Clothes for coming home in for baby + 3 other sets of baby clothes
  • A car seat to bring baby home in
  • Breast pads and panty liners (maternity ones - there will be a lot of blood!)
  • Nipple cream (if you plan to breastfeed)
  • Nappies, a secret stash of baby wipes and cotton wool (to use with water instead of baby wipes so that the midwife doesn’t tut at you)
  • Breastfeeding/ nursing bras (at least 2)
  • Big knickers (at least 4 pairs)
  • A treat to use in the bath or shower afterwards (conditioner, nice soap, etc) but nothing too heavily scented
  • Make-up (believe me you may feel glowing but check out those first baby photos in 3 months and you will realise you looked tired and blotchy)
  • If you know or suspect that you will be in hospital for longer then pack more day clothes for yourself, more clothes for baby, nappies, a book or entertainment for yourself and more pyjamas.
