What is Symphasis Pubis Dysfunction?
Your Symphasis Pubis is a stiff joint supported by many stiff ligaments which connects the two halves of your pubic bone at the front.
Symphasis Pubis Dysfunction is pelvic joint pain suffered during pregnancy due to the added pressure on your pelvic joints and the relaxing of your ligaments caused by to the release of a hormone in pregnancy called relaxin which softens your joints in preparation for childbirth.
SPD usually begins in the second or third trimester of pregnancy and will usually continue until the birth. For more severe SPD you may need to make a special birth plan with your midwife to minimise the pain and pressure during the final stages of labour.
If you have any of the below you may be suffering from Symphasis Pubis Dysfunction;
- Pain in your lower back, hips, groin, inner thighs or pubic area
- Pain when walking, going up or down stairs or getting out of bed
- A clicking sound or grinding feeling in any of these areas
So how can you treat SPD?
- Some people may find relief in using a bump belt/ stomach support which is like a big thick elastic band which lifts some of the pressure of your bump off your pubic bone.
- You may ]#also feel better in flat shoes
- Rest often and never push yourself if you are in pain
- Take it slowly when making movements which seperate your upper legs such as going up stairs, getting out of the car or getting out of bed
- Ask your midwife about gentle pelvic floor and abdominal exercises to strengthen the ligaments
- If the pain is severe a walking stick or crutches may help.
What is the cure? Sorry but the only cure is getting that baby out of there!
