Teething can be agony both for baby and for the parents. In addition to gum pain babies can often also get red cheeks, coughs and colds, disturbed sleep, tantrums, nappy rash and a temperature. It can sometimes be worse when back teeth are coming through.
There are many over the counter medicines which can help but for parents who don’t want to give their child medicine or need a little extra help these tips may provide some relief:
Peel a carrot straight from the fridge and give it to baby to chew on. It is cold and for gums or tiny teeth it is virtually indestructible
If you have one of those babies who won’t take medicine then add it to a bit of formula or water in a bottle. If you don’t like your baby having anything sweet from a bottle then mix it with some fromage frais or baby food
Let them chew on something or everything! As long as it won’t disolve and they won’t choke or poison themselves anything goes
Be patient and give them to someone else to hold whenever you can. It will be long and stressful but it will be over one day. The best thing about teething is that it eventually results in teeth and then the pain is gone.
